Finley’s Nursery

Lauren and Craig Edwards of Taylorsville, Kentucky were selected as recipients of the 2018 Dream Nursery by Liz and Roo. Working together with them to plan their nursery was a joy! Read about how we transformed a bare room into a nursery for baby Finley, who arrived March 22.

Pantone’s “Ultra Violet”, Color of 2018

When Lauren and Craig Edwards brought their baby girl home in late March, it was to a beautifully transformed bedroom-turned-nursery. And, the color just happens to be the color of the year. Lauren was ahead of the trend when she selected lavender last fall, and since that time this color (Pantone Ultra Violet) has become one of the top choices for baby girl nurseries. You can get more information on lavender color combinations in the Pantone Violet Color Guide. Lauren and Craig wanted to add a complementary color, and chose soft gray for the nursery wall.

Starting with a blank slate – an empty room painted in neutral, off white tones – they decided to paint an accent wall (in gray) behind the crib. The other three walls were painted in a soft white.

Lauren and Craig chose a damask pattern for the bedding, and wanted to incorporate personalization, using Finley’s name in a wall plaque and both name and initials in monogramming. We began sewing and monogramming, and Lauren and Craig went to work to paint the nursery and to start the search for a chandelier.

The nursery is small, so we kept that in mind with the colors, patterns, and placement of furniture. Lauren’s friend Sara gave her an old dresser that they refinished and painted. This serves as the changing table station. We also made a lamp shade cover and monogrammed it with Finley’s initials.

When looking for a changing table, remember you don’t have to buy new furniture, because DIY is really (easy even for a novice).

Look at some of these great ideas for refinishing a dresser from Pinterest. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to repaint a dresser. Finally, here is a tutorial about how to make a changing pad tray to put on top of a dresser. You can do so much with DIY and ideas from Pinterest. Name plaques or giant initials are really popular additions to the accent wall behind the crib. Lauren chose a 3-D mounted on wood with Finley’s name.

At Lauren’s baby shower, everyone was asked to bring a book instead of a card. This is a super cute idea that sets the stage for baby Finley’s early years.

Lauren and Craig love classics like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in addition to long time favorites, The Hungry Caterpiller and Dr. Seuss classics. We love the hand made settee that doubles as a bookshelf. They covered the seat with a solid lavender (violet!) to coordinate with the curtains and bedding. Doesn’t the baby Koala bear look adorable?

Finley’s Lavender and Gray Nursery

We made lined curtains in the lavender damask pattern and also monogrammed a baby pillow (which also serves as back support for Lauren when sitting in the glider).

The crib bedding includes a crib rail cover, designed to prevent teething marks on the crib rail, but also serves as a beautiful alternative to crib bumpers, which are a strong “no” from the Pediatric Society of America.

Bumperless bedding is all the rage these days, and a crib rail finishes the look of the nursery while serving a valuable function. We also monogrammed the crib rail with Finley’s initials. The crib sheet is a lavender medallion pattern, and the crib sheet has a strong, one inch elastic band that wraps all the way around the mattress for a safe and secure fit. The faux fur receiving blanket also has the damask pattern on the reverse side, and the crib skirt was made in the lavender damask pattern as well.

Lauren and Craig received this adorable mini rocking chair for Finley at her shower. The cushion was made with the same fabric we used in the curtains and other bedding accessories.

We love the finished space and how much it reflects so many meaningful things to Lauren and Craig, from the hand sewn quilts to the butterfly mobile to the wall plaques with inspirational messages. We wish them a lifetime of joy with baby Finley!
